Transit Unplugged News Minute: Paris generates power from turnstiles

Bloomberg reports a two-day experiment at a Paris metro station, where passenger turnstiles were turned into turbines that converted kinetic energy to electricity. If turbines were implemented across the entire Paris metro network, they could produce 136 megawatts a year, saving 30, 000 tons of CO2. Source: Bloomberg.

In the US, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority has seen a 14 percent decline in crime on trains and buses. WMATA credits increased police patrols on vehicles and the addition of more than 30, 000 cameras. Source: WMATA.

And the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) kicks off its One Fare program for TTC customers, eliminating double fares for transfers to GO Transit and other GTA transit agencies. Source: TTC.
